Illustrator Our chat with Laura What do you love most about kids books? I love the pictures! I find it amazing how a story can be told in very few words because so much of the narrative is in the illustrations. When I was a child, picture books really sparked my imagination and made me want to become an illustrator. Did you have a favourite childhood book? As a child I loved Richard Scarry books more than anything. I always enjoyed reading, but I was definitely more interested in the pictures and in creating my own stories. Scarry’s busy scenes kept me amused for HOURS! How many books have you done? I just had a quick count and I have illustrated 20 books, with two out next year! I feel very grateful to have been given the opportunity to work alongside some fantastic writers and publishers over the last few years and I’m really looking forward to the future. What age did you start to enjoy illustrating? I can’t think of I time when I have not enjoyed it! Do you have a favourite object/thing to draw? Cats are definitely my favourite thing to draw. They inspire me so much! Sometimes I make up cat characters up in my head or sometimes I am inspired by real-life moggies. Almost all of my neighbours own a cat, so there are many, many feline visitors to my little garden throughout the day. Oddly enough, they all seem to get along with each other really well! Does it take long to complete a book? It can take anywhere between 4 and 7 months for me to finish a picture book. I often start with sketches to make sure I get the main character just right. Once the they are finalised, I create very rough pencil sketches of the whole book, followed by more detailed sketches in ink. When the sketches are signed off by the client and any changes made, I start on colour artwork which is the most time-consuming part. It’s a long process, but it’s so rewarding to see my work in print. I never get tired of it! Are you friends with other authors? Yes! I used to share a studio with author/illustrators SandraDieckmann and Sophie Gilmore who create the most BEAUTIFUL books. I tend to meet other illustrators quite regularly via meet-ups and at publishing events and I am always struck by how lovely and supportive illustrators are of each other. Have you ever read a book before, that you didn't like? I know how much hard work goes into writing and illustrating and how incredibly nerve wracking it can be to release your creative endeavours into the world, so even if something isn’t quite to my tastes, I always try to appreciate the effort that’s gone into publishing it. Have you ever thought about illustrating older novels for children or adults? Oh yes! I would love to do fiction work for older children. I adore black and white illustration! Any new up coming titles coming out soon, that we should be looking out for? Mummy’s Suitcase written by Pip Jones is out now! The book is about a little girl called Ruby Roo who’s Mummy is going away for three whole days, so she decides to pack a suitcase with all the things she knows her Mummy loves best. Hop Little Bunnies, by Martha Mumford is another recent title that I hope your readers enjoy. It is based on the popular nursery rhyme 'Sleeping Bunnies' and is perfect for very young children. BARNEY_INS_LAURA-6 From Quick, Barney, RUN! by Pip Jones and published by Faber and Faber MUMMY'S SUITCASE_UK_PB-9 and MUMMY'S SUITCASE_UK_PB-9 MUMMY'S SUITCASE_UK_PB-15 From Mummy's Suitcase by Pip Jones and published by Faber and Faber. Author & Illustrator Here is our little chat with SuzanneWhat do you love most about kids books? Talking specifically about picture books, I love the idea that a child doesn’t have to be able to read to get enjoyment from them. Any child can pick up a picture book and tell a story to themselves based on the illustrations alone. Picture books are also an equalizer. They can bring you joy to a child no matter what their background or circumstances. They are a little bubble of happiness. Do you have a favourite childhood book? I had lots of favourites but the ones that stand out also seem to mark milestones in my childhood. I remember the day our Librarian introduced us to Grug. I was in kindergarten and she had a giant copy of the book. From day one I was hooked. Once I could read by myself There’s a Hippopotamus on our Roof Eating Cake was a favourite along with Possum Magic. Then a few years later I got a copy of the Eleventh Hour for my birthday (11th of course). This made me look at books in a whole new light. There was more to just reading the words and looking at the pictures. They were an art form. Does it take long to complete a book? This is a tricky question. Once the story is written, the illustrations of a book can take a few months to a year depending on revisions. Then it gets sent to the publishers where there are a whole range of other things that need to happen before it eventually makes it to the shops. It’s a very long process. Are you friends with other Authors? Absolutely. I am friends with lots of authors and illustrators. Unlike a lot of other industries children’s publishing is a super supportive environment. We understand that everyone has different skills and that we are not in competition with each other. It’s very refreshing. Have you read a book before that you didn’t like? Of course. I would be lying if I hadn’t. But that is the great thing about books. You just pick up another. There are books to suit everyone, the fun is in the searching. What inspires you to draw? I don’t think there is one thing that inspires me. The more I draw the more inspiration I get, and it can come from anywhere. Drawing or art in general is just something I need to do. I don’t function properly without it. What do I love the most to draw? This changes. I always love drawing for kids but I also love botanical illustration and food illustration. There isn’t one thing I like the most, its usually what I am working on right now. What doesn’t change though is my love for colour. Regardless of the subject matter what I create has to be vibrant and fun and full of colour. Any new titles coming out soon that we should be looking out for? Written by Nick Dent, I have a new picture book coming out in June. It’s called Goat on a Boat and is super fun. That’s all I can say about that right now. What do you love most about kids books? They are an unbelievable creative medium. I equate making a picture book to making a film. I get to direct it, light it, cast the characters and even write the script. It’s such fun. I also love the fact that most people's first ever experience of stories comes through reading a piucture book. As such, I feel like we, as picture book makers, have a responsibility to try and get people hooked on reading for pleasure. If you can get them early, you’ll have them for life! Did you have a favourite childhood book? I loved anything and everything by Richard Scarry. The detail! I spent hours poring over the illustrations trying to find all of my favourite characters. I also loved Dogger by Shirley Hughes and How The Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr Seuss. Does it take long to complete a book? It does. The text alone can take six months to a year, which seems unbelievable given that the stories only take about ten minutes to read. The rhymes have to be absolutely perfect you see, and to make that happen whilst maintaining the pace and rhythm of the story is very hard. The illustration part is the really fun bit for me. One book usually takes me about two months to draw. How many books have you done? I have written and illustrated nine picture books, seven of which have been published at the time of writing. The other two come out in the next few months. I have illustrated quite a few others for various authors too. You can see them all here robbiddulph.com/books Whats your favourite food? Ooh, that’s tough. I’m a big steak fan. I’m a big egg fan. I’m a big sushi fan. I’m a big lobster fan. I’m a big chocolate fan. In fact there isn’t much I’m not a big fan of! If I had to choose one meal it would probably be a full English breakfast. No baked beans though. That’s just wrong. When did you start drawing? My mum says I was drawing as soon as I could physically hold a pen. So for as long as I can remember, basically. Did you take any art classes growing up? Well, I studied art at school, then I went to university for four years to read fine art and graphic design. I also did lots of life-drawing classes. Where do you live? In London. What do you do on the weekends? Most of my weekend is spent driving my daughters to and from their dance classes! Occasionally I get to go to an Arsenal match though. Football is a big passion of mine. What type of music do you like? All sorts, but mainly guitar based stuff. I’m a Beatles buff - there’s not much I don’t know about them! If you could do anything, what would you do? Play football for Arsenal and score the winning goal in the Champions Legaue final. What inspires you to write/draw? My children. The children I meet at my events. Art galleries. Fantastic films. Great TV shows. Anything and everything really. Do you have a favourite thing to draw? My go-to warm-up drawing is always an apple. I have no idea why! Any new up coming titles coming out soon, that we should be looking out for? The third book in my Dinosaur Juniors series is out on April 4. It’s called Wide Awake and is all about a little dinosaur who can’t get to sleep. I have another book coming out in August too, but I’m not allowed to tell you about it yet. All I can say is that I’m very pleased with it. I can’t wait to show it to people and tell them all about it. That’s a clue, by the way :) Thanks Rob for chatting with us, My girl is very much into the Grinch at the moment as well (she is currently watching it while I am working on my blog. We are not bake bean fans here either. There is so much to love about kid's books! I love the inspiration, empowerment and entertainment that they provide. I love how they are a child's introduction to literacy and a love of learning, and I love how they are a perfect combination of art and prose. It is this last element that makes picture books magical; the sum of words and illustration that is more touching that each element on its own. How many books have you done? I have illustrated four picture books and written two picture books, The Lion in our Living Room and The Bear in our Backyard. Of course, I have written many more stories, and I hope to be able to share them with children one day. How long have you been writing for? I have been writing seriously for about five years. It took me a long time to become confident enough to get my work out there. I have come from the highly competitive world of professional ballet, and it was a huge surprise to discover the welcoming community in the world of children's literature. Do you love being able to read your books to kids? Yes! Reading books to children is one of my greatest joys, and I gladly accept every opportunity to explore my stories with children. Presently I conduct community storytelling at a local market, book signings, and school and kindergarten visits with my puppetry and storytelling performances. It's a joy to observe children's reactions. Recently I had a very enthusiastic young reader roar his whole way through The Lion in our Living Room. It was fantastic; just like having added sound effects! Did you have a favourite childhood book? I have so many books that I love from my childhood. I adored the illustrations from Beatrix Potter and May Gibbs, and the first stories that I strongly remember are Arnold Lobel's Frog and Toad. If it is possible, I think I love these stories even more today. Does it take long to complete a book? This is definitely a piece of string question. Usually, it takes many years to create a picture book from the initial concept to the day when you finally hold a book in your hands. Sometimes the writing comes quickly, but more often the idea needs time to develop. After the publishing house acquires the manuscript, editors will cast their wise eye over the story, an illustrator will design roughs, storyboards and final artwork, and a designer will lay out the text and cover design. I have seen this process take anything from one year to even four or five years. Are you friends with other authors? Absolutely. The community of children's authors and illustrators is strong and supportive. We have an enormous wealth of talent in Australia. I am a member of many writing organisations as well as the illustration co-ordinator for SCBWI (The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators) on the Sunshine Coast. Have you ever read a book before, that you didn't like? Reading is a personal experience so not every book will appeal to everyone. We have our narratives and see things through different coloured lenses, so a book that speaks to someone else may not be right for everyone. I do enjoy many books across different genres, but I will always make a beeline to the picture book section of my local bookshop. What inspires you to write? I am inspired by the potential of children and my wish to bring joy, hope and empowerment to their world. I believe firmly in the power of story and how a story stays with you for a lifetime, often coming into focus right at the moment when you need it most. I am happiest when writing and illustrating for children. Any new upcoming titles coming out soon that we should be looking out for? I am thrilled to say that I have a new title coming in September with Affirm Press, illustrated by the brilliant Connah Brecon. I'm not sure how much I can reveal at the moment, but I am incredibly excited about this one! Thanks Emma for taking the time to chat to us and answer some questions it has been great. Lady Pancake & Sir French Toast How many books have you done? My 10th book, It's Not Hansel and Gretel just came out on March 1st Do you find it hard to come up with new book ideas? I come up with new ideas all the time - it's just a matter of which ones are worth spending hours and weeks and months and years working on. What inspires you to write? My kids. Any kids. Finding books I love. And coffee. What makes you laugh? Clever humor. And potty humor. And llamas. Do you have a favourite Disney character? Gaston (watching him is like looking into a cartoon mirror). Super Hero or Villan? I think the previous question probably answers that. What is your cat's name? I have 3 cats: Hiro, Lincoln Hawk, and Catnip Everdeen Did you have a pet as a kid? A few goldfish, but that's it. My dad was allergic to everything (except goldfish, of course). Any new up coming titles coming out soon, that we should be looking out for? How to Code a Rollercoaster, sequel to How to Code a Sandcastle, illustrated by Sara Palacios, comes out on September 24th! For more information: My website is https://www.joshfunkbooks.com My Twitter is @joshfunkbooks My Instagram is @joshfunkbooks My Facebook page is www.facebook.com/Josh.Funk.Books Author & Illustrator What do you love most about kid’s books? As a non-fiction fan as well as someone who has always been a visual learner, I love how children's books can explain a challenging topic in a way that's visual, clear and fun. Did you have a favourite childhood book? I don't have one book in particular. I loved to draw and make things as a child and I remember a giant book of craft activities for each day of the year that I always turned to for ideas. I also loved to copy the illustrations from books, and would try to recreate the drawings from Helen Oxenbury's Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland book. How many books have you done? The Sea Book is my second book that followed on from The Bee Book. Both books are part of a series about environmental conservation topics. What inspires you to write/draw? I've always been inspired by the natural world and once I've found something that I'm interested in and passionate about then it sparks ideas for page layouts. The writing and drawing really goes hand-in-hand for me. Its about finding a way that pictures and words can work together to most clearly show what it is that I want people to know about, whether that’s about food chains in the Arctic or the life cycle of a honeybee. I feel strongly that people need to understand how the natural world works to want to protect it, and that’s what motivates me to make books. Do you have a favourite thing to draw? Strangely, its insects. I love the colours and symmetry in them, but wouldn't want to get too close in real life! Do you find time to read a novel? I'm a huge audiobook fan. I've always loved reading but found it difficult to find the time and place, especially when getting a seat on the train is a rare occasion. But since discovering audiobooks I listen to stories while I'm walking, travelling and even when I'm working. Are you are a cat or dog lover? I love both. Since I can remember I've always wanted a dog and I'm still working on it! Do you have a pet? I have two very fluffy cats, George and Mia. They have very different personalities. Mia's smart and makes it very clear that she likes her own space, whereas George is the dopey one who's always looking for a lap to fall asleep on. What do you do on weekends for fun? I live in London, so there's never a weekend when you're stuck for ideas of things to do. I always enjoy the occasional day visiting one of the museums or galleries that are available- the natural history museum being my favourite. I also love a craft market and have recently discovered the crafty fox market, which is great for meeting other creatives as well as enjoying some of the amazing street food that is on offer. Where is your favourite place to go? Living in a city, every now and then I get itchy feet and need to get outdoors into a natural space. I live near a national trust park, Morden Hall Park which is my favourite place to spend a day outdoors. It really is a bit of an oasis in the city with a river, farm, wetlands and a very quaint second-hand bookshop. Do you visit a local bookshop regularly? I love to look in bookshops. Unfortunately I don't have one very local to me, but where I work in Covent Garden I am spoilt for choice and will often spend my lunch breaks browsing books. Any new up coming titles coming out soon, that we should be looking out for? Its early days, but fingers crossed there will be another book coming out February next year which will follow the same themes of inspiring a love of nature and understanding different ecosystems. I grew up in Queens, New York. What was your first job? My first real job was a line cook at Pizza Hut..which lasted two weeks and a half. When did you start to draw? It's the connection I create through the work that keeps me going. Do you have a favourite thing to draw? I always loved pin up art. Fashion and movement. What makes you happy? Creating. Exploring new ways to create art. I also get a kick out of making my daughter laugh through stories. What is your favourite part of the day? Afternoons. The colors in the sky calm me no matter whats going on in the day. Any new up coming titles coming out soon, that we should be looking out for? Yes! YES! What do you love most about kids books? Children's books – especially picture books – are the perfect platform on which intergenerational bonds can be built. In my experience both as an author and a parent, there is no better way to connect with the tiny humans in your life than through reading good books together. Beyond the quality of the interaction, positive experiences with books from an early age will – with any luck – foster a love of reading in the child, and latterly help them find joy in education and learning. Did you have a favourite childhood book? I was really (really, really, really...) into dinosaurs as a child, and so my favourites were – and are, still! – quite dry, non-fiction, fact-heavy books about dinosaurs. The way these books used to be illustrated, in almost photorealistic gouache/watercolour was just beautiful and awe-inspiring to the 4-to-10-year-old me. The majority of contemporary non-fiction reference books tend to be illustrated in a very styled, flat, modernist way. These books look great as a standalone product (or even as an addition to a publisher's carefully-curated stable) but I feel the contemporary non-fiction style often bypasses the substance, forgetting the awe along the way. Does it take long to create a book? Books can be decades in the making. Even the simplest premises, characters and constructs can be built from a thousand ideas, influences and idiosyncrasies coalescing at the right moment. For me, physically writing a picture book takes only hours or minutes; editing takes days or weeks; and illustrating takes weeks or months. Have you ever read a book before, that you didn't like? Mr. Funny certainly did not live up to the promise of the title. What inspires you to write? I am inspired to write and create books by the drive to leave the world in better shape than it was, when I got here. If we all do our little bit to advance the collective consciousness – even by just a whisker – then we will begin to have a chance at improving the wellbeing of the Earth, and everyone on it. This manifests in a handful of common themes in my work – such as consciousness, oneness, and the beautiful, cyclical nature of all things. Overt allusion to (or explicit description of) flatulence also seems to manifest more than I'm comfortable with. Any new up coming titles coming out soon, that we should be looking out for? Yes! My latest book with my better half, Laura (pictured) is out now: Another-Book-About-Bears And I have a few books due for publication in the months ahead. I'm only the illustrator on all of these, but there's heaps more to come from me in 2020 and beyond: - Mum For Sale, by Zanni Louise (April 2019) - Bad Crab, By Amelia McInerney (July 2019) - Liarbird, by Laura Bunting (September 2019) You can find more about Philip Bunting and his books at: philipbunting.com Instagram @philip.bunting You can find Philip Bunting at www.readings.com.au www.booktopia.com.au www.bookdepository.com www.amazon.co.uk www.fishpond.com.au www.wordery.com Illustrator Meet Ingela What do you love most about kids books?
It is such a wonderful way to tell a story, to be able to mix images and text. I myself do many books without a classical story and it is so much fun to do illustrations that you know kids will look at and learn words from. And to see kids enjoy my books at for example Instagram makes my heart warm. Does it take long to complete a book? It all depends of the book of course. My books about cites take a long time of course because of the amount and complicity of the illustrations. A boardbook with five spreads goes faster. But they do take some times as well. Simplicity is harder than you think. So say it takes everything between two week to months. How many books have you done? Around 65! What inspires you to draw? I get inspired by beautiful things. I might see porcelain in a flea market, art at a museum, a piece in a bookstore - and that inspires me! Do you have a favourite thing to draw? I still like to draw animals and I also like do draw faces. If you could be anything what would it be? Might sound boring but I would be an illustrator. But maybe an illustrator with the skills to write too. What is something you have alway wanted to do but haven't done it? When it comes to my work: I would love to paint again, have an exhibition with big paintings. When it comes to my free time: I would have loved to do an Ironman to but that is to late..:) Where is your favourite place to visit? Nice, France. And Alsvik, Yxlan, Stockholm archipelago. Do you have a pet? No. Where are you from? I was born in The Hague, Netherlands but moved to Sweden when I was two. Any new up coming titles coming out soon, that we should be looking out for? Our chat with Jess from Adored Illustrations. What do you love most about kids books? Escaping in them! I love reading to my kids and going on the same adventure as them and seeing their little minds engage with the words and illustrations. Did you have a favourite childhood book? We read a lot of Dr Seuss in our house! The Cat in the Hat was a favourite. I then moved onto the Baby Sitters Club and must have read every book at least a few times over! What was your favourite thing to do as a kid? I was a really active child - we lived on a big property and rode our bikes in paddocks and built cubbys. I also loved drawing. My favourite Uncle was the most amazing illustrator and I loved sitting with him drawing our dreams. Does it take long to complete a book? Yes!! From when I start writing it to when it is published it's around 8-10 months. I am working on some longer books at the moment and as they obviously take longer to write than the ABC ones it's an even longer process! Very worthwhile and rewarding though to see the finished product :-) How many books have you done? I have written and self-published 3 books so far (The Enchanting ABC, The Incredible ABC and The Amazing ABC) with a fourth book coming out in July. What makes you happy? My family. I have two little ones and an amazing husband and wonderful extended family who I'm constantly inspired by. Writing. A good coffee or glass of wine depending on the time of day! The simple things and moments make me happy. What inspires you to write/draw? The inspiration to become serious about writing comes from my Nanna and Uncle who I lost five years ago around the same time, both very suddenly. The were both talented artists as well as writers and I was always in awe of their creativity. I like to think they left it here with me :-) But day to day the reason I keep doing what I'm doing and the things I write about come from my children and husband. I write about things my children like and some of the new writing I'm doing is inspired by my husband and our relationship. I want my children to be proud of me and know that no matter where their lives lead them it's never too late to follow your dreams. And to make sure they have dreams. I know I lost mine along the way but now that I've found them again there's no stopping me! Do you have a favourite thing to draw? I mostly doodle to be honest! I have illustrated for my new book and really enjoyed the challenge but most of what I've been drawing lately has been nature inspired - leaves, flowers, clouds, rainbows. The great thing about being creative is it can take you anywhere! Next week I might be drawing animals - who knows!? When did you fall in love with art? I've always been a really creative person but I lost that creativity as I grew up and went into the corporate working world and started my family. I'm so thrilled to have found it again but I have always loved to draw and illustrate and write. Anything creative I enjoy. I think my strength lies in the writing but I'm dipping my feet in the world of illustrating which I'm really enjoying as well. Do you have any pets? We have an aquarium filled with fish and two chickens (Tigger and Flossy). We are planning on getting a puppy this year. My kids nagging looks to be paying off for them! Any new up coming titles coming out soon, that we should be looking out for? I am releasing my fourth book The Enchanting 123 in July this year :-) This is our first 123 book so it's really exciting. It's already proven more challenging in the design aspect then the ABC books but that's ok I enjoy a challenge! We have just turned The Enchanting ABC into Flash Cards so we will be turning our other two books into Flash Cards as well in the coming months. There are also plans for another book later in the year! I left my corporate job at the end of 2018 to throw myself into running my business and writing so I'm very happy to be so busy! Thanks Jess for chatting to us, Your books and cards are stunning and I can't wait to see the new addition when it comes out in July! More Information. adoredillustrations.com.au Make purchases here.
